SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Senator Michael Frerichs (D – Champaign) voted with his Senate colleagues to
convict Rod Blagojevich of impeachment, removing him from the office of Governor of Illinois.
The decision, which was unanimous in the Senate, comes after four days of a trial that saw extensive
testimony and evidence demonstrating that Blagojevich used the power of his office for his own personal
and political gain. During the impeachment trial, the prosecution presented evidence of wrong doing such
as wiretap recordings dealing with the alleged shakedown of a prospective campaign contributor. The
prosecution also demonstrated abuses of power with respect to state hiring practices and the enactment of
programs without approval from the General Assembly.
“Having considered the evidence presented by the House prosecutor, it is apparent that the Governor has
demonstrated a clear pattern of abuse of power throughout his tenure as Governor of this state,” said
Senator Frerichs. “His behavior shows that he has often put his own self-interest ahead of the interest of the
people. Given this fact, I believe that the corrupt behavior of the governor indicates a clear inability to
govern and that he should be removed from office.”
After the conviction, Senator Frerichs motioned for a vote on whether Mr. Blagojevich should be
disqualified from ever holding public office in Illinois again. The motion passed by a unanimous vote.
“The abuse of power displayed by Mr. Blagojevich during his time as governor indicates to me that it
would be dangerous for him to hold another office,” said Senator Frerichs. “I hope it sends a message that
the people of Illinois will not tolerate corruption by their public officials.”
Upon the vote for removal of Mr. Blagojevich from office, Lieutenant Governor Patrick Quinn has been
elevated to the office of Governor. Senator Frerichs is hopeful that the change will lead to a brighter future
in the state of Illinois.
“The people of Illinois deserve better from their elected officials,” said Senator Frerichs. “I am glad we to
have finished the impeachment process, so that we can get to work on solving the issues we were elected to
address.”
“While today’s conviction marks a low point in Illinois history, I am hopeful that under new executive
leadership we can get things done that matter to Illinois citizens. My colleagues and I will continue to work
to bring a better image of public service in Illinois.”
